Van’s Aircraft RV-10 – Design, Development, Production and Performance

The Van’s Aircraft RV-10 is a four-seat, single-engine, low-wing, amateur-built aircraft designed by Richard VanGrunsven and manufactured as a kit aircraft by Van’s Aircraft Inc. of Oregon, USA. It is the first and only four-seat aircraft in the highly successful RV series and was designed to provide family touring capability while retaining the performance, handling qualities and simplicity that made earlier RV aircraft popular.

Unlike many kit aircraft designed primarily for sport flying, the RV-10 was intended as a practical cross-country aircraft capable of carrying four adults, full fuel and baggage, while maintaining excellent speed and short-field capability.


Origins and Development

Background

Prior to the RV-10, Van’s Aircraft had built its reputation with a range of highly successful two-seat aircraft:

  • RV-3
  • RV-4
  • RV-6/RV-6A
  • RV-7/RV-7A
  • RV-8/RV-8A
  • RV-9/RV-9A

These aircraft became known for:

  • excellent handling
  • strong aerobatic capability
  • efficient aluminium construction
  • relatively low operating costs
  • fast cruise performance

However, Van’s identified a market demand for a larger aircraft capable of transporting families and additional passengers.

The design challenge was to create a genuine four-seat aircraft without sacrificing the “RV character” of light weight, responsive handling and economical operation.


Design Programme

Design Philosophy

The RV-10 was designed around four major goals:

1. True Four-Person Capability

Many aircraft marketed as “four-seat” designs have limited rear-seat space. The RV-10 was designed to carry:

  • four full-sized adults
  • full fuel
  • useful baggage

The cabin accommodates occupants up to approximately 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m).


2. RV Handling Qualities

The aircraft was designed to retain:

  • light control forces
  • precise handling
  • excellent roll response
  • enjoyable recreational flying characteristics

3. Efficient Performance

Rather than using excessive horsepower, Van’s focused on:

  • clean aerodynamics
  • lightweight construction

This provides good cruise performance without the fuel consumption of heavier certified aircraft.
